Emotion of the circumstance Essay

‘†¦ Often did my human nature turn with loathing from my occupation, whilst, still urged on by an eagerness which perpetually increased, I brought my work near to a conclusion. ‘ The opening of chapter 5, the climax of the story where the monster is brought to life, is a clear example of the use of the literary device of pathetic fallacy, where, in this case, the weather matches the emotion of the circumstance. There are also several more examples of this throughout the chapter. ‘It was on a dreary night of November that I beheld the accomplishment of my toils.. ‘ ‘Morning, miserable and wet, at length dawned,’ ‘†¦ although drenched by the rain which poured from a black and comfortless sky.. ‘ The ‘moment of creation’ is the most detailed of all, and excites the reader with the rich descriptive content. It also gives the reader a chance to compare their idea of what the monster looks like (having been influenced by film versions, comic versions or other forms of media) to how the monster is set out in the book. The description given by the book is as follows: ‘His yellow skin scarcely covered the work of muscles and arteries beneath; his hair was of a lustrous black, and flowing; his teeth of a pearly whiteness; but these luxuriances only formed a more horrid contrast with his watery eyes, that seemed almost of the same colour as the dun white sockets in which they were set, his shrivelled complexion and straight black lips. ‘ In comparison to modern literature, there is a lot of description within this novel, the above quote is an example of this. To a modern audience, the fact that there is lots of detail makes the story seem slow moving, yet it provides a good build up right up until the end. Also, at Mary Shelley’s time, when the book was published, reading was an engaging form of entertainment, so the vast array of detail would have been enjoyed and appreciated a lot more and would have enhanced the experience for readers of the time. The story is structured well throughout, and the narrative structure, in particular from the different characters (Captain Walton, Frankenstein, the monster), is unexpected and adds to the tension, as well as allowing the reader to see the story from all points of view, and to enable the reader to empathise with the monster in his situation where he would otherwise be treated as the villain. Merely the fact that Frankenstein has been adapted many times into films, long detailed descriptive books, plays, radio, comic books, cartoons and the like is evidence that we, today, are still interested in it. All of the things I have mentioned beforehand all work together to continue to draw people to the book. Interfering with nature One of the main ‘lessons’ within the story itself is undoubtedly to respect God as the supreme creator- there are lots of examples in the text that warn against interfering with nature; Victor himself warns Captain Walton, a young ambitious explorer who has set foot into the unknown (an area of the north pole, which, at that time had remained undiscovered) ‘You may easily perceive, Captain Walton that I have suffered great and unparalleled misfortunes†¦. You seek knowledge and wisdom, as I once did; and I ardently hope that the gratification of your wishes may not be a serpent to sting you, as mine has been†¦ when I reflect that you are pursuing the same course, exposing yourself to the same dangers which have rendered me what I am†¦ ‘ Also when telling his story to Capt. Walton he constantly reflects on what has happened, thinking about the consequences of his actions, and the consequences and implications that have resulted from his taking science too far. ‘Learn from me†¦. at least by my example, how dangerous is the acquirement of knowledge, and how much happier that man is who believes his native town to be the world, than he who aspires to become greater than his nature will allow. ‘ Whilst telling his story to Capt. Walton, Victor talks of how his excitement and exhilaration at the prospect of reanimating the dead took over, and how he viewed himself as almost God-like: ‘A new species would bless me as its creator and source; many happy and excellent natures would owe their being to me. ‘ Shelley plays around with the idea that Victor is ‘playing God’ in the title; ‘Frankenstein- A modern Prometheus,’ referring to the mythological Greek tale of Prometheus, son of Zeus, whose job it was to create life. Prometheus felt sorry for the primitive mortals on the earth, so he stole fire from Zeus to give to them. As a consequence he was punished by Zeus, who had him shackled to the side of a mountain. Each day, Prometheus would be tormented by Zeus’ eagle as it tore at his immortal flesh and tried to devour his liver. Each night the torn flesh would mend so the eagle could begin anew at the first touch of dawn. This myth relates to Frankenstein, although loosely, it carries the same warning that Frankenstein also carries: if you interfere with the path of nature, bad things will happen to you. Whilst he is telling his story, Victor tells us that he had his doubts beforehand, however his ambition and thirst for knowledge quickly took over. ‘.. I doubted at first whether I should attempt the creation of a being like myself†¦ but my imagination was too much exalted†¦ to permit me to doubt of my ability to give life to an animal as complex and as wonderful as man. ‘ In Chapter 4, Victor toys with the idea that he is a ‘creator’ and ponders the idea that the monster should view him as his father, and he his son; ‘No father could claim the gratitude of his child so completely as I should deserve theirs. ‘ Victor becomes excited at the prospect of this and it drives him on, yet he does not pause to think about the possibility that things will go horribly wrong, as we know they do later on in the story. Nevertheless, Victor prepares himself to ‘reanimate’ his creation, but he panics when he has brought it to life, and, realising how repulsive it is, flees in terror, abandoning his creation, along with the idea that he could have had a meaningful father-son relationship with it. One could argue that the monster, despite having carried out the murders of Justine, William and Elizabeth later on in the story, is not at fault. Had Frankenstein accepted his creation from the very beginning, events might have been different, therefore, Frankenstein, although indirectly, is to blame for the evil deeds the monster has carried out. The monster does not come into the world as an evil being- it is full of love and kindness for mankind, yet is eventually turned against humans, who judge him by his appearance rather than his character. They taunt him, hurt him and reject him in the same way that Victor had. Therefore it is not surprising that, having been left alone, he acts on his instincts and reacts in the way he does. The main idea within the context of Frankenstein relates to modern day science in many ways: Science and technology are progressing at an astonishing rate. Many ethical and moral issues are frequently being brought up concerning these developments. The current controversy surrounding the cloning debate is one such example, as is the first successful ‘face transplant’ that has recently taken place -this scientific reality is very similar to Dr. Frankenstein’s frightening discovery that Mary Shelly imagined 200 years ago.

My Favourite Author †Ayn Rand Essay

â€Å"We are fast approaching the stage of the ultimate inversion: the stage where the government is free to do anything it pleases, while the citizens may act only by permission; which is the stage of the darkest periods of human history, the stage of rule by brute force.† Ayn Rand, who lived from 1905 to 1982, made this statement over 50 years ago; in 1961. One can only help but wonder if there’s a better way to describe the state of our country today; in 2013. There might be a lot of issues on which an intellectual mind may differ with Ayn Rand but on this particular statement, most would agree today. We might not already be there, in that stage; but we are fast approaching it. The stage where all the fundamental rights are reserved for the government, and whoever the government might decide to bestow them upon. The right to the freedom of speech seemed to be one of the first to be sacrificed followed by the right to equality before law. The others might just follow suit. This assertion is not based in vacuum but on the argument that how many people have suffered arrests and exile for executing their right to freedom of speech and how many people have faced the wrath of biased legal prosecution and persecution to satisfy the collective conscience of the society? Ayn Rand had, time and again, stressed on this very aspect of the course that we have been taking. Although her writings were based on American context, they can easily be seen to reflect the global society and also, specifically our Indian societal and administrative system. And that is why; Ayn Rand is my favourite author. For the ideas she propagated are universally applicable and are highly rational even though they have been widely criticised as impractical. And throughout her life she defended those ideas by her writings, by her life and by her conduct never compromising on her conviction. Her philosophy and school of thought came to be known as objectivism. It is based on the concept of objective reality that demands that ‘a man’s morality should not be based on faith, emotions or arbitrary whims but on reason and rationality that can be demonstrated when in question’. There are few things that can inspire a person throughout their life; Ayn Rand’s words have that potential. She inspired me.

Analyse the cause and effects of the New Zealand Wars Essay

There have been many New Zealand Wars which have impacted the Maori. Throughout the history of New Zealand there have been several wars and all of them having different causes and effects. The Wars starting after the treaty, with wars like the Wairau incident, Kingitanga movement these wars have affected the Maori for a long time. The most important reason being the cause of the wars was the treaty and the different interpretations of the treaty being the Maori and English Versions of the Treaty where as there was a miscommunication that happened between the word ‘Kawanatanga’ and ‘Sovereignty’- an example being in Article One the Maori Version having: â€Å"Chiefs gave the queen ‘te Kawanatanga Katoa’ – the governance over the land.† And the English Version has: â€Å"Chiefs gave the queen ‘all rights and powers of sovereignty’ over the land.† This Miscommunication causing mass conflict between the Maori and English as they put faith in the treaty and were disappointed at the fact that the European Authority who ignored the conditions that both the Maori and English agreed on at the signing of the treaty. Conditions of Britain led to the Mass Migration and sky-rocket the demand for land by settlers as they were looking for a better life in a New World. The population in 1801 changed from 16 million to 26 million in 1841 as a wave of European settled in New Zealand. But the New Zealand Company overcame all of the barriers. Investors in the company were all promised 100 acres of farmland and one town acre; the 1,000 orders were taken within a month. To tackle the negatives of New Zealand were covered up by the company using pamphlets and broadsheets to promote the country of New Zealand ‘the Britain of the South’, a fertile land with a warm climate and free of activities of class war and starvation on the streets. The partially owned land made good by land purchases from Maori, one of which leading to the Wairau Incident in Marlborough. Gibbon Wakefield’s neat and fancy in it all plans didn’t work out as there was a lack of useable land. As an outcome of the New Zealand  Company’s policy the community of European people increased to 28,000. The New Zealand Company had established the outlines of immigration from Britain to New Zealand, setting in place the promotional pitch that were used by the region and in later years the government. Governor Grey attacked the British Colonial Office with proposals of a new plan that he thought would be appropriate for New Zealand’s situation. He established the principles that this vote should be extended that rapid colonisation combined with peace and prosperity would soon fuse the ‘two races into one nation’. The voting rights for the national government were property-based. Even with the qualifications required to be able to vote were put similarly low; it was very democratic at the time. While Maori owned land, it was owned collectively rather than individuals. The Maori charter was delayed by the court decision that communal ownership did not give the vote. The New Zealand Company’s Nelson settlement needed over 1000 allocations of 201 acres each, which had to be ‘fertile, productive land’. Over 200,000 acres were required, of which was almost a tenth of the ‘Native Tenths Reserves’. But there wasn’t enough suitable land, early 1843 company were sent to the unpurchased Wairau lands. Ngati Toa chiefs immediately asked that their land not be apart in the company’s ‘purchases’. After months of protests, the Ngati Toa chiefs evicted the surveyors and burnt down their shelters. Police Magistrate Henry Thompson responded to this by arming a militia in an attempt to arrest the chiefs at Wairau. On June 17 the whole situation fell apart as the confrontation ended in 20 Europeans and 4 Maori were killed.

Evaluation of Safety-Critical Software Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2750 words

Evaluation of Safety-Critical Software - Essay Example To that end, there were several attempts to measure the dependability of safety-critical software. Similarly, Harlan Mills and his colleagues had developed a process called â€Å"clean room† that utilized independent testing groups to act as end users of programmable devices and were said to generate reliable results than the common practice of software professionals who performed a series of carefully planned tests to measure the reliability of their owned inventions. All things considered, an exhaustive mathematical test, not only based on intuitive reasoning, must be conducted to ensure the trustworthiness of safety-critical software. Programmable computers are tools that provide convenience to the end users, however, devices that are controlled by safety-critical software can threaten lives of people, as well. To that end, an extreme discipline in design in the making is needed. Data and related information should be laid out in a way that it could be easily comprehended by an independent group of testers. That is to say that â€Å"clean room† as developed by Harlan Mills and company must be applied to prevent unbiased results. Human errors often occurred, especially when software professionals would try to self-assist their own works. With this in mind, why engineers had chosen software instead of hardware? In the first place, software components were less expensive than hard-wired logic. These components were massed produced. Secondly, logic, in theory, that was implemented on software could be easily changed than of the one implemented on the hard-wired device. Lastly, software is more flexible than of non-computerized system. For instance, the modern computer technology could provide more information to the end users in a more convenient manner. Less space and power were needed to produce this information.

Literature Review and Report - Essay Example The growth of wines in the market urged Fosters to move in these wine industries, and he earns more than expected compared to its previous business, the beer company. In the USA, it’s been stated that its continuous growth in the past 30 years has enjoyed and has never experienced two years of falling demand. But this summed up had changed when overcapacity in the production of wines occurred. And unfortunately, this instance is now the source of many of Foster’s problems. Beringer Blass Wine Estates (2004), for instance, consolidated some production and warehousing facilities, wrote down the book value of excess bulk wine inventory, and selected "non-strategic vineyards" in California and Australia to put up for sale. Same with what happened to Fosters when he encountered the overcapacity in his production, forcing Fosters to make changes before his wine business will automatically descends By the first half of 2003, Fosters earnings had dropped to 64 percent due to deep price cutting since other wine business, or its competitors had cut away their profit margins. The immediate fall of earnings of Fosters obliged him to cut costs levelled with the costs of its competitors. But Fosters didn’t engage immediately in planned change before its wine business got into trouble. Fosters was expecting that, sooner, the sales he produced on the preceding years will continue on the following years. But he rather experienced more difficulties and therefore cleared that Fosters needed to undergo significant changes to get back on track. The first he does was the appointment of a new chief executive, Trevor O’Hoy, which also headed the wine business. Their main focussed under the new chief executive, which are the biggest threats to Fosters successfully carrying out this change program, was focussed on cutting costs and improving efficiencies. An established company in a maturing market is

The role of John Brown and his quest to end slavery and how it may or Essay

The role of John Brown and his quest to end slavery and how it may or may not have the nation toward Civil War - Essay Example Brown moved to live amongst the black community to lead asafather to the slaves.Varied opinions emerged about his main objective and critics claimed was to arm slaves for a rebellion; he however denied that but eventually, his actions resulted to civil war. At the age of 50, Brown became a radical abolitionist who he deemed God had preferred him to lead slaves to freedom (DeCaro 15). According to him, even if the freeing slaves would entail force that was God’s will. Brown first declared his interest in leading an anti-slavery movement during his meeting with Frederick Douglas (DeCaro 15). In 1847 and according to Douglas, despite being a white man, he sympathized with the Blacks as if he felt the pains and cruelty that characterized their daily lives. In 1854, the Kansas –Nebraska Act gave citizens residing in either of the territories rights to decide whether they will cease from holding onto slavery of persist with it. He took advantage of this and moved to Kansas together with five of his sons. Numerous people who were against servitude also started relocating to Kansas with the intention of securing it for the pro slavery faction. He turned to be a significant icon undertaking anti-slavery guerilla agitations besides initiating slavery attack in Lawrence. In 1856, the invaded the town and killed five of its residence. He did this by combining his efforts together with that of sons to continue opposing slavery in Kansas and Missouri for the remaining part of 1856. Brown decided to launch an attack in Virginia whereby before then embarked on gathering an army and acquiring adequate funding to support his it (Elliot 61). He came up with an army of 21 men comprising of 5 blacks and 16 whites. Preparation took place in the freedman farm as they planned how to capture Federal Arsenal at Harpers Ferry. In their planning, they provided weapons such as pikes and rifles (DuBois, William, Finkelman, &

Reconstruction Plans History Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Reconstruction Plans History - Essay Example Many view this as a method of ending the war, rather than rebuilding the South, since so many issues were not touched upon thoroughly. This failure to set up long term goals definitely cost the country in the future. Johnson, on the other hand, wanted to limit the federal government's role in rebuilding the South and instead wanted to give the states the power to rebuild themselves. He believed in strong state governments, rather than federal policies that would blanket the entire area. At the same time, Johnson wanted to rebuild the South in a hurry, which also avoided any long-term goals. A major issue was that Johnson pardoned countless landowners who had been major advocates of the Confederate army and did not provide any protection for former slaves. This prevented blacks from becoming equal members of society, since the landowners were able to use their wealth to gain political power in the South. Congress then made three Constitutional amendments that were aimed at helping the reconstruction effort. These amendments abolished slavery, granted American citizenship to everyone born within the country and provided civil rights for these individuals. Later on, the 15th Amendment made it illegal to deny an individual’s right to vote based on skin color or race, although this did not give anyone the right to vote. This means that the states would still have control over their own elections and could still prohibit certain individuals from voting. Many blacks were prohibited from voting, which eliminated the chance of African-Americans gaining any political power. In hindsight, many different things could have been done to maximize the reconstruction effort. For starters, Lincoln needed to gain more support in the South before his policies could have a lasting effect on society. Lincoln’s short-term goal was to quickly unite the country, but he did not look at the long-term picture as much as he should have. By only asking 10 percent of voters in a state to pledge allegiance to the country, he was leaving a great deal of dissention to work against him later. The majority of the people in those states did not even want to rejoin the Union, which made working with them very difficult. In order to properly build the South, Lincoln needed to gain public support in the region before bringing those states into the Union. The first goal of the president at that time should have been a public relations effort to gain support throughout the South, in an effort to convince these states that joining the Union was the best course of action. To test this popularity, he could hold a referendum in the States asking if the voters want to join. This might have taken 10-15 years, but it could have created a more stable South in the end. In addition, there is no reason to believe that just because someone takes an oath, that the person would be loyal. Voting numbers would be a much better gauge than an individual pledging allegiance to a count ry that he may or may not believe in. Johnson’s ideologies created many problems in the South because he wanted the federal government to wash its hands of the problem. At that time, the South needed strong central leadership because its economy was in such bad shape. Assuming that Lincoln’s plan had already gone through and the Southern states had been forced

Current Event Paper - Assignment Example Contemporary events in the contemporary world relating to project management include the emergence of mergers and social corporate responsibility. Amalgamation is a conglomerate business take-over activity, which involves a lot of skills, tools, techniques and knowledge in order to meet a business’ set objectives (Project M.I, 2013). In the modern business world, take-over business operations revolve around the triple constraint project management plans for its success. Lastly, the social corporate responsibility is also an emerging contemporary issue where all the business project management operations must be ethically correct. The emergence of mergers and corporate social responsibility relates to project management concept due to these issues’ levels of technicality. Project management is a technical issue in the decision-making parameter hence without sufficient knowledge, tools and techniques project management’s goal plans are unachievable. How Capitalism Works in Different Scenarios Coursework

How Capitalism Works in Different Scenarios - Coursework Example According to Hagopian capitalism is a social organization which is currently experienced in every country. In this type of organization, means that are used for production are owned by a minority group in society (capitalistic class). The rest of the population has to sell their labor in exchange for salary/wage (working class). Unlike the communist form of organization where a society has no classes, in capitalism class division plays a major role. Capitalism is best explained by Karl Marx who says a capitalistic society has two main classes; those who have (own the means of production) and those who have not. There may be the existence of other classes in society but the two are conceived as the major ones. According to Marx those who have are fond of exploiting those who do not have hence conflict will always exist between the two classes. This is what forms a capitalistic society and that is how it operates.Capitalism is the mode of production that is employed in our contemporary societies. In many societies today you will find the existence of the two main classes. Exploitation comes about when the capitalistic class uses the working class to their benefit. This is because as much as the working class is the one working on the ground the overall profits realized go to the capitalistic class. Costs paid by capitalists in the production process such as salaries are way too low as compared to the profits realized. These profits are then invested in order to generate more profits, leading to further wealth accumulation. When the working class gets tired they will result in a revolution and finally, the society will go into a state of communism. At this stage, no one owns anything and Marx asserts that the process will repeat itself.Blaut (127) explains the history of capitalism by first letting the people know the transitional debate history. Capitalism origins can be best explained through the commercialization model. ration to show how capitalism works is in factory scenarios, where a lot of people are involved in the production process but the profits are reaped by one person.

Impacts on Environmental Policies for Air Pollution

Impacts on Environmental Policies for Air Pollution Implications for the Future In Charlotte, NC a problem of environmental, is air pollution. Air pollution is the preface of a combination of solid particles and gases into the atmosphere of Earth’s. Such solid particles and gases comprise biological particulates, materials, chemicals, and additional destructive materials. Air pollution has turn out to be a foremost apprehension for residents in the Charlotte Metropolitan area, since it is one of the prime and incessantly developing metropolitan regions in the USA. As a result, the pollution in this region has an effect on the environment and virtually 2.45 million humans beings and several animals. In addition the Charlotte Metropolitan region is one of the smoggiest metropolitan areas of the United States’ (Hankins, 2013). Air pollution adds to change in climate, have an effect on the welfare of the surroundings and that of human and animals life, and have an effect on the quality of life. Several strategies subsist for endorsing constructive environmental behavior to battle air pollution, and the positive and negative outcomes of air pollution can add to pro-environmental behavior. In addition, as for innovative technologies, there are negative and positive advances that have an effect on the environment and policies of environmental having an influence on the atmosphere. Strategies for Positive Environmental Behavior Promotion â€Å"Traffic and industrial air pollution sources increase in cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, particularly in populations suffering with core cardiovascular disease† (Barrett (2012), p. 1). To support positive behavior of environment as for battling the air pollution effects or reducing the quantities of mixtures of solid particles and gases into the atmosphere, several strategies exist. In particular two strategies are to fetch about social alertness of the outcomes of air pollution and taking action in opposition to the actions of discharging mixtures of solid particles and gases into the environment. Social alertness is one means of promoting constructive environmental behavior that conveys attention to the outcomes of air pollution with respect to the environmental effects and illustrates the individuals attentions with respect to informative information in relation to the health risks of an environmental problem. Once individuals turn out to be aware, that is, relating to the environmental outcomes of air pollution then there is a superior possibility that this will endorse positive environmental behavior with reference to modifying processes and behavior that add to mixtures of solid particles and gases discharging into the environment. An additional strategy to endorse positive environmental behavior is to acquire action in opposition to the processes and behavior of release mixtures solid particles and of gases into the environment. By taking action, this demonstrates the apprehension with reference to this problem of environment, and action such can certainly endorse the positive behavior of environmental of others with reference to altering the behavior and processes that add to discharging mixtures of solid particles and gases into the environment. Negative and Positive outcomes of Air Pollution add to Pro-environmental Behavior Air pollution positive and negative consequences have the capability of escalating pro-environmental behavior in exacting ways. It might not appear similar to negative consequences of air pollution can add to pro-environmental behavior other than certainly this can. Air pollution negative consequences are that it has an effect on the environment, adds to change in climate, and adds in the decline of welfare of human and animals (Brunekreef Holgate, 2002). Particularly, for human beings, air pollution adds to cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, particularly for humans with core cardiovascular ailments (J.R. Barrett, (2012).). These sorts of unconstructive outcomes direct to pro-environmental actions with respect to protecting the human health and environment from the air pollution effects and the effects of change in climate. Such negative outcomes can result in endorsements for organizations and individuals that do not meet the terms to place standards in position to diminish th e release of mixtures of solid particles and gases into the atmosphere. As a result, such negative outcomes of sanctions direct to behavior that adds to stopping such negative outcomes of air pollution and directs to behavior of pro-environmental to evade from such sanctions. In regard to positive consequences escalating pro-environmental behavior, when individuals are aware of that combating the negative outcomes of air pollution directs to positive consequences for instance lessening the negative effects of air pollution with reference to the environmental and human life. As a result, this behavior endorses persons to act in pro-environmental ways to additional reduce the injuriousness connected with the undesirable outcomes of pollution of air, which directs to pro-environmental behavior. As well, such positive outcomes will persist to direct to pro-environmental behavior consecutively to not endure from additional or future outcomes of air pollution. How Technological Advancement have affected the Environment Technological progressions are making the production, processing, distribution, development, and exploration of natural resources and substitute resources extra cost effective, and protecting in regard to the environment. Technological advances provide humans a means of battling negative outcomes on the environment that are the effect of human mistake, human behavior with reference to exhaustion of natural resources, and additional human behavior that contributes to negative effects on environmental for instance air pollution. As a result, technological advancements can have positive effects on the atmosphere; on the other hand, technological advances can as well have unconstructive outcomes on the atmosphere. Quite a few positive and negative instances subsist of technological advancements that have an outcome on the surroundings. One positive instance especially is the Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV). â€Å"A Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) is a kind of electric vehicle and hybrid vehicle which merges a conservative internal combustion engine (ICE) system of propulsion with an system of electric propulsion† (S. K. Kazmi, (2012). p. 40). These kinds of vehicles restrict the effects of emissions being discharged into the environment which adds to air pollution since they make use of systems of electric propulsion that do not need the utilization of fossil fuels. On the other hand, exacting technological advancements have restrictions, and cannot meet up explicit objectives or wants of humans with reference to not influencing the surroundings. As a result, the Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV) are as well negative instances of how advancements in technological influence the environment. Hybrid Electric Vehicles make use of systems of electric propulsion together with internal combustion engine (ICE) system of propulsion (S. K. Kazmi, (2012).). As a result, they yet need the utilization of fossil fuels which discharge emissions into the environment and add to negative effects on environment for instance air pollution. as well, these types of vehicles yet depend on additional fossil fuels for instance oil to grease the stirring parts of their ICE propulsion systems; as a result, the fossil fuel demand yet remains. Technological advancments can have positive outcomes on the atmosphere other than at the similar time yet influence the environment in negative means. Assessing the Environmental Policies Influence , â€Å"Environmental policies can have negative and positive effects for individuals and for a society all together† (L.Steg, (2013). p. 257). Environmental policies are individuals and organizations commitments to position policies, laws, or rules that are of the concern of sustainability of environmental and issues of environmental. As for individuals they can both acknowledge and change behavior to act in accordance with with environmental policies or turn out to be subject to the outcomes of challenging such policies. Many environmental policies can negatively have an effect on a particular person since of the outcomes of not conforming with such policies; on the other hand, such policies have constructive outcomes for the preponderance of persons (L.Steg, (2013).).). As for society, when policies of environmental are in effect absolutely have an effect on society. Organizations and Individuals have influences on executing environmental policies in expressions of how both organizations and individuals have an effect on the environment and how what happens in and to the environment influences individuals or occupants of the environment. As a result, executing environmental policies take place at diverse levels with reference to protecting, effecting and targeting individuals and organizations consecutively to safeguard the environment and its occupants (L.Steg, (2013).). Environmental policies have constructive effects for the environment since they safeguard the environment, humans, animals, ecosystems, and from the negative actions of organizations and humans. Environmental policies incessantly require changing or improving, safeguard and protect the environment and occupants of the environment. Conclusion Air pollution is a problem of environment that has an effect on the safety of the environment, contributes to change in climate, and the welfare of human beings and animals. Strategies such as bringing in relation to social alertness of the air pollution effects to the environment and taking action in opposition to the actions of discharging emissions into the environment are proficient of endorsing positive environmental actions. The positive and negative consequences of air pollution have that ability of escalating pro-environmental actions. Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV) is instances of how technological advancement positively and negatively have an effect on the environment. In addition, environmental policies can have a constructive effect on the atmosphere when executing such policies. References J.R. Barrett, (2012). Air pollution intervention. Exposing the Darkness of Joseph Conrads Heart of Darkness :: Heart Darkness essays

Revealing Lies in Heart of Darkness A lie is an untruth. It can be a false statement or a statement left unsaid that causes someone to be misled. In life, lies are told for many different reasons. In fiction, they thicken the plot. In Conrad's Heart of Darkness, Marlow dislikes lies and therefore only tells two, both in extraordinary circumstances. The lies that Marlow tells show several things about him. For example, even though he has been touched by evil, he is still a good man. He never actually tells a lie, instead he lets others continue to believe what they already believe. This helps him justify his lies. Marlow, in the middle of his story, interrupts himself to say "You know I hate, detest, and can't bear a lie." He does not think that he is better than the rest of the world. Lies simply appall him. Marlow feels there is a "taint of death, and a flavor of mortality in lies." Lying makes him feel "miserable and sick, like biting something rotten would do." Since he feels this way, he would only tell a lie in extraordinary circumstances. The first lie that Marlow told was in an extraordinary circumstance. It was told because of a notion that it would somehow be of help to Mr. Kurtz. The lie was told in order to allow the brick maker to think he had more influence in the company than he actually had. This lie would help Kurtz in two ways. Firstly, it would help Marlow to get the rivets he needed to fix the boat, and that would provide Kurtz with either a means of communication or a way out of the jungle. Secondly, it would provide Kurtz with an ally who was perceived as influential. Marlow knew that others were jealous of the Mr. Kurtz’s success. Some saw him as the next "Director of the Company," and some were trying to find a reason to hang him. If Marlow was considered powerful, he might be able to help Mr. Kurtz. This was an extraordinary reason for telling a lie. The second lie was also told in extraordinary circumstances. It is told to "the intended" so that the image of her dead fiancà © would not be destroyed. She had waited at least two years for her lover to return from Africa, and during this time had built his image up in her mind.

king tutt :: essays research papers

Tutankamun’s Life Tutankhamun, or better known as King Tut, was a pharaoh who accomplished little in his life. He did not expand Egypt’s borders nor enjoy triumphant victories like the many pharaohs before him; however, he is the most recognized and probably the most famous pharaoh today. But why is he so famous? This answer can be attributed to the discovery of his tomb and his elaborate treasure. King Tut’s tomb was a major discovery of the 19th century. It was discovered November 4, 1922 in the Valley of the Kings by Howard Carter. It was a phenomenal discovery that made headlines across the world. Up until the discovery of King Tut’s tomb, it was believed that all royal tombs had been robbed and drained of their treasure. For the first time, a tomb, which was almost intact, had been discovered and remained hidden from robbers for thousands of years. The tomb revealed an elaborate lifestyle that many people could only dream about as well as providing clues and insight into King Tut’s life and how he lived. Even though little is known about Tutankhamen’s life, we do know that he was given the throne at a young age, which it has been estimated that he was about eight or nine years old when this happened. During the time that this occurred, Egypt was in turmoil due to his father’s religious movement. His father, which is believed to be Akhenaten, had changed the religious system and the old beliefs that had been practiced for hundreds of years before him. This religious change angered many angry citizens and priests. Tutankamen was left with an angry and chaotic Egypt to rule. The birth name of Tutankhamen was Tutankhaton, which meant â€Å"Living Image of the Aten.† His father, which remains a mystery, is believed to be Akhenaten, although some evidence points to Amenhotp III. His mother remains a mystery as well but she is believed to be Kiya. It is thought that Tutankhaton must have had a good childhood. He probably spent his younger years hunting, swimming, and studying. His tomb revealed he enjoyed board games. Like most children, he probably found politics unexciting and went about his environment enjoying leisurely activities. Because he was a child, he probably had an ignorant view about his father’s teachings and politics. He was also believed to be an ill child due to the many walking canes that were found inside his tomb.

Social Deviance in Bartleby the Scrivener Essay -- Bartleby Scrivener

Social Deviance in Bartleby the Scrivener Bartleby the Scrivener is a story that takes place on Wall Street, peopled by workers of a common mold. Being a non-conformatist of the most extreme type, Bartleby is eventually suffers a death of attrition. The message that Melville intends for the reader is how society has little tolerance for social deviance. I mentioned a common mold, the engine which impelled the "society" of Wall Street to keep on existing. This common mold consists of working a full day, going home and relax, possibly drinking some beer or whatnot. This is where the theme of ostracization of social deviance comes into play, expressed in the metaphor of individual versus society. Those who do not fit into the common mold are pressured to change or are removed forcibly. Bartleby is an example of a character that doesnÍt fit anywhere even near the mold...

Bend it like Beckham; Food Symbol

Beckman is a movie directed by Grinder Chad. It revolves around listener, a teenage Indian girl who's passion is for playing soccer. This film explores many important themes such as racism, sexuality, stereotypes, breaking gender barriers and culture. The theme that I will be focusing on Is culture. The main symbol for ‘culture' is food. Food is a recurrent theme of the film that is constantly repeated in scenes but only subtly. It has surprisingly Important significance to do with both the Piston and Bahamas families.. Women are typically in the kitchen both Western and Indian culture. The character Mrs. Bahamas is an excellent example of this practice. She is almost always seen cooking, eating or Just being around Indian food. She is constantly trying to teach Jess how to cook, but when Jess shows no desire to learn how to cook. Jess Is removing herself from the traditional ways of a Sikh woman. Sikh women are traditionally housewives, and by Jess refusing to learn to cook goe s against the ways of Sikh culture. In contrast to Mrs.. Bahamas, Jess is going against he ways her parents have taught her, becoming less integrated in Indian culture and bringing shame to the family. She Is bringing shame to the family, because her family believes no man will want a woman who can't cook. This worries Mrs.. Bahamas because she wants nothing more than her daughters to be married off. An Important scene expressing Jess' opinion towards cooking is, when she Is learning how to cook a full Indian dinner. While her mother stands at the stove, Jess defiantly bounces a capsicum from knee to knee. Despite being forced to learn how to cook, sees still obsessed with soccer and will even incorporate it in the kitchen! It is a metaphor for how Jess feels learning to cook Is Just another way for her parents to control her future. Another example of a key scene demonstrating Mrs.. Bahamas opinion of Jess, is when she finds out she has Joined a women's football team. Jess is sitting on a couch with her parents looking down on her. Chad has used a low angle shot, demonstrating the vulnerability of Jess and the power of her parents. Mrs.. Bahamas shows she Is concerned about the future for her daughter: â€Å"What family ill want a daughter-in-law who can run around kicking football all day but can't make round chapattis? Once again, she includes a reference to food, and how Jess needs to submit to the stereotypical role of a woman in order to get a husband. This brings me onto my next point about how cooking Is expected from women In Western culture too. In the Piston household, Jules' mother is similar to Mrs.. Bahamas in the way that she believes playing sport Is masculine. Mrs.. Piston Is constantly reminding her daughter that, â€Å"No boy's going to want to go out with a girl who's got bigger muscles Han him! In desperation to stop her playing football. Even more ridiculous than 1 OFF Jules' for the first time Mrs.. Piston's only comment is, â€Å"You k now, I cooked a lovely curry the other day. † She immediately resorts to talking about food because that is all she knows about Indian culture. She believes she is associating herself with Jess, but is actually only associating with the stereotypical Indian woman, not Jess. In continuation of this scene, Jules' mum is bringing up a tray of cheese and tea, when she hears the two girls quarrelling.Having missed the beginning of their argument (over Joe) she believes them to be lesbians and retreats downstairs. She is so horrified by her daughter she can't bring herself to speak with Jules. Mrs. Piston is holding tea at this time. Tea often represents comfort and a sit-down chat, but Mrs.. Piston is so appalled she can't even face her own daughter. Once again, the mother figure can not, or does not want to understand her daughter's perspective. Paula (Mrs.. Piston) attempts to understand football, literally by using food. The scene begins with Alan (Mr..Piston) explaining the rul es of soccer by using various condiments by stacking them around the table like soccer players on a soccer field. When Jules arrives home she notices her mother has read a stack of soccer magazines. Paula says, â€Å"That way, we can all enjoy football as a family. † Mrs.. Piston researches some professional female soccer players, and finds one that is happily married with a baby. This is not the point where she accepts her daughter's career choice, but mainly points it out in an attempt to encourage Jules' to break up her ‘relationship' with Jess.In conclusion, food is a major aspect in Bend It Like Beckman. It links the two cultures in the film together. In the end both mothers accept that their daughters want to become professional soccer players. Jess and Jules both managed to ‘bend' gender rules and the will of their mothers in order to pursue their dreams. This is the meaning of the title, Bend It Like Beckman. When Mrs.. Bahamas finally accepts her daughter 's career choice she finishes off with a quote food related: â€Å"At least I taught her full Indian dinner, the rest is up to God. †

Advertising: Make the Consumer Believe They Are Superior Essay

Advertisers persuade people into buying their products by making the advertisement appealing to the consumer. By relating alluring experiences that in most cases have nothing to do with the product at all. It is a psychological strategy that advertisers use to make the consumer believe that by buying the product they will be superior or they will get some kind of satisfaction out of it. Researchers have found a way to discover codes hidden in advertisements that make the unconscious mind want to buy the product. Advertisers relate the products to pleasurable experiences and they use emotional branding to make money. Researchers study the right language to sell a product or idea by trying to figure out a code to the unconscious mind of why people actually buy the product. According to (Clotaire Rapaille) from â€Å"The Persuaders† advertisers know how Americans feel about the product, â€Å"there are unconscious associations with every product that we buy†.† Every word has an unconscious code in every mind marketers understand the real need of the customer sometimes unspoken and they deliver give me want we want†. Marketers try to connect their products to the consumers they are persuasive and they have plenty of selling strategies to get to people to buy something. They relate the product to a certain group of people for example, there was an advertisement that was shown on the film â€Å"The Persuaders† that made a connection with happy people saying that Song a new airline is for happy people. It could be very difficult to get around in this world with a degree of self- awareness as to what’s happening because all these messages are trying to move us to act and make choices on an emotional level and probably the best way to not fall into this trap that advertisers put consumers into is not to believe in the advertisements. (Rusgkoff, Persuaders) Advertisers capture the attention of teens by relating cool or pleasur able experiences to products. They obtain their attention by telling them what’s cool. On TV commercials or at the stores that teenager are most likely to visit. Persuasion is an important role in capturing teen’s attention. Teens are easily persuaded into buying things by the media, advertisers know that teens have favorite celebrities and they use it to capture their attention. Teens attention is captured by the images and wordings that an advertisement has. There is a story that teens can identify just by the picture and by how well the advertisement is organized. It is so easy for teenagers to be amazed by some products being advertised. Teenagers want to have everything that is cool, everything that is going to make them stand out or popular among their own groups. (Rushkoff, Merchants) An example of emotional persuasion is that advertisers are trying to sell their products by making people believe that by buying a product they will be superior. Advertisers relate their products to culture, sports, family anything that is important to people. For example they might advertise something that has to do with a groups culture. Therefore consumers buy the product because they feel that it relates to their culture and makes them feel good. Emotional branding is used to describe a way of life. What people like to do or they are accustomed to do advertisers try to put it in their advertisements. Images and words are important to tell a story within an advertisement. Products are related to things that we enjoy doing advertisers want to make us think that the products we purchase make us who we are. An important strategy that advertisers use is imagery. Imagery displays pleasurable experiences or things that make people laugh. For example the joy they would feel if they bought energizer max batteries because the bunny is so catchy and gives a precedent of how the batteries work. (Maasik and Solomon) Having the correct picture in an advertisement can be very beneficial. Images are what capture peoples’ attention. Pleasurable experiences are shown in images so that the consumer is enlightened by the product and could see themselves in that pleasurable experience. Imagery is very important in selling products. It defines what people want and the words in the advertisement makes people see what advertisers want them to see and feel in order to sell their product. . Pictures give advertisements a sense of what the product means. A product can mean many things in an advertisement but the images show emotion towards things that people want.(Streeter) Images of desire are substituted for actual products on the advertisements advertisers goal is to transform desire into necessity. â€Å"Semiotics is a tradition of thought known for calling attention to the formal structures of signification, of meaning-making, in culture.†(Streeter) Advertisers use psychology to sell their products by associating products with pleasurable experiences, this is how consumers are persuaded into buying a product even though sometimes the pleasurable experience has nothing to do with the product being advertised. Advertisers want to know how the unconscious mind works when it comes to deciding whether or not to buy a product. They believe that the unconscious mind makes people buy things that they don’t need. Advertisers try to satisfy consumers’ needs throughout images and words to make them feel that they deserve to have that pleasurable experience that is being shown in the advertisement. Some ways that advertisers use psychology to sell their products is by making us think that we need the product but we buy a certain brand because it associates with something that we enjoy doing. For example, their favorite brands, things that they like, colors that they might find alluring. Advertisers are willing to pay these people for information to gather ideas for new advertisements. (Rushkoff,Persuaders) Day after day people are exposed to advertisements. There are advertisements in every building, any place we look at. People are being persuaded to buy things and many do not realize it. Many do not even imagine that behind those fascinating images there is a code that advertisers worked too hard to uncover so that people buy their product.

Unfortunately, such terrible things happen, they might have happened to your loved ones already. I know you are expecting the hospitals to take care of such cases. I understand that you are expecting the hospital to have all the resources that will help them to recover or even to prolong their lives. However, hospital alone is not enough to guarantee their full return to health. What would you do in your case? There is one thing you should do to help. This is one reason why you should join The National Association of Nurse Practitioners in Women's Health (NANPWH). This association deals with women’s health, and will take care of such cases if a nurse practitioner enrolls as a member. ... My sister suffered in a hospital for a long period, but I could not do much to help her. Last month one of our colleagues in this clinic opened my eyes and convinced me to join the association. Now its one month since my sister left the hospital, she has recovered and is about to resume work. This is because of the constant care that the association provided. You cannot wait until it is too late for you to join (American Nurses Association, 2010). The leadership of the association is democratic and well recognized by the government. The Government recognizes that NANPWH is a significant contributor in nursing and women health care. The association provides education about policies of the organization to all members and ensures that they participate in the policy making process. Some members in the leade rship team are nurse practitioners who have experience and understand the dynamics of health care needs for women.
